Casemate shelters

WW2
Under the old city of Maastricht you can find some old fortifications and about 12 km's of corridors from the 18th century.
At the beginning of WW2, a part of this underground system is transformed into air raid shelters for the civilians of the city of Maastricht. They made seats, lightning system, air systems and toilets for the people to stay underground. There was a capacity for 25.000 citizens and it was used several times during war time situations.

Cold War
After the WW2 and the start of the Cold War, additional shelters, equipment and facilities where built according the technical views at that time.
The Civil Protection organization, BB A-kring Limburg-a, was responsible for the protection of the civilians.

There are tours around the casemates of Maastricht, please contact the local tourist office.

Fort St. Pieter

On one of the hills around Maastricht the Sint Pietersberg you will find the former 18th century Fort St. Pieter on about 125 meters above see level, looking freely over and beyond the city. At this moment the old fort is being renovated and will be ready during the summer of 2007. A big party centre is situated in the fort now.
On top of the fort you can find a watchtower for looking out for air plain attacks and an approaching enemy. The tower was built in 1937 by a voluntary military group, because of the upcoming political situation in Europe. At the beginning and during the war the site was taken over by the Lucht Bewakings Dienst (LBD) that had to look out for attacks by airplanes.
After the war the location was taken over by the Civil Protection service BB as watch out for airplane attacks and atomic bombs impacts. Therefore they placed  measuring apparatus in the bunker. This apparatus is also renovated and will be placed back inside the watch out.
