Kernwerk IJmuiden
Bpt. 73 Wn. 73 H (Heer) M (Marine)

This beautiful fortress can be found in the middle of the harbour of IJmuiden.
There a lot bunkers build on the island and together with the old Dutch fort it was
an impressive island. In 1960 a major part of the island was demolished for the expansion
of the waterways, unfortunately most of the bunkers were destroyed then.
In the fortress itself you can find lots of original drawings, rooms, passages, big stairs to bunkers and the turrets for the 5 Dutch 24cm guns. The Germans connected several bunkers with the fort and they re-used the fort in their defence system. There are several bunkers that need our special attention; a beautiful reconstructed 644 bunker with a copula with 6 openings, the bunker is now a museum. There is also a nice personnel bunker, 635 build in A and a beautiful casemate for a 4,7cm PAK, type 631 and  last but not least a V191 depth charge thrower, you can still see the installation for the charges and  a original depth charge but in a bad condition.

The fortress is open for public at specific days and times, you can visit the island on a tour and that will take +/- 3 hours, more information can you find at there website www. Forteiland.nl
